Through the WiFi4EU project, the European Commission promotes free access to the Internet for all residents and visitors in public spaces such as parks, squares, public buildings, libraries, hospitals and museums all over Europe.
The project budget is € 120 million for the period 2018-2020. The program can be applied by the Municipalities and will each receive a voucher of EUR 15,000. Each municipality will choose the centers of public life where the routers will be installed for free internet access. So far, 21,783 municipalities from all over Europe participate in the program.
In the Cyclades, 14 municipalities, including Kythnos, have been included in the program, who will be funded with a sum of EUR 15,000 to implement the project upon a request to deposit with public spaces that wish to provide free internet access.
