Under the cloudy sky and high above the Town of Kythnos, the Castle of Oria unfolds its mythical dimension through tradition and oral stories.
Oria Castle
The path to the castle of Oria leads high, to the top of the mountain. Where you think you will touch the heavy black clouds in the sky, you see the white remnants of the castle. For about 300 years this castle dominated the life of the place.
The legend and the destruction of the castle
The myth gives a poetic view of the destruction of the castle.
In order for the Turkish pirates to conquer the impregnable castle, one of them disguised himself as a pregnant woman and sought refuge. The "Oria kori" (means beutiful girl in Greek) of the castle commander allowed her to pass inside. The Turkish pirates who besieged the castle found an opportunity and invaded. Later, the "Oria kori", blinded by her remorse, jumped from the walls to the steep cliff and was killed.
